Does this mean that the dimension perpendicular the beam is > 1 mm ?

The electron path will of course not be straight. If the geometry is chosen correctly enough electrons will not exit the silicon for the peak to be visible.

Attachment shows energy deposition in 1 m x 1 m x 3 mm deep silicon layer.
