Hello,

the reason to select FTFP_BERT as a recommended can be seen from Geant4 validation pages:

http://geant4.cern.ch/results/index.shtml 

In short: FTFP describe well hadron inelastic interactions between 5 and 20 GeV, where QGS is not accurate, in particular, for proton and neutron production. For higher energies also FTF in general is better but difference is less.
