The default cut value is a term specific to the Geant4 simulation code.
It is an artificial limit that is used to reduce the computation time
required to calculate the energy loss of charged particles in materials.
The value of this cut can be different for e+, e- and gamma, but by
setting the default, the same value is used for all three.
What the cut does is decide when a charged particle stops losing energy
by the emission of secondary particles and begins to lose energy by a
continuous, virtual process. A large value of the cut means few
secondary particles will be emitted and a small value means that many
secondary particles will be emitted. This only applies to some
electromagnetic interactions.
