Out of curiosity, why is it that this happens?
I had the same problem, and the solution never would have
come to me had I not read this post - is it a difference in 
the way the examples are linked, or dependent on the rest
of the simulation code in what we write by hand?

I could understand if it were just a problem with the way
the NIST manager was used or called, but for the results to
vary between perfectly running and segfaulting only by 
changing the physics list (even if the two files are
identical!) is difficult to grasp - and is it possible that
this effect or something similar is subtly lurking in other 
areas of the framework as well?
