Question Ion Mass? What is going on...

Forum: Particles
Date: 22 Nov, 2016
From: Evan Rand <Evan Rand>

Hi,

I'm running Geant4.10.2.p02 and I'm passing ions to my particle gun using:

G4ParticleDefinition* ion = G4IonTable::GetIonTable()->GetIon(Z,A,0.0*keV);

I'm interested in getting the ion mass or nuclear mass (the electrons shouldn't make a big difference, and the nucleus is in it's ground state). I'm finding the masses are incorrect!? For example, for Z=6 and A=12 (C-12) the mass in MeV/c2 should be 11177.92914.

Using ion->GetPDGMass(); or G4IonTable::GetIonTable()->GetNucleusMass(Z,A); both return 11174.86339. That's ~ 3 MeV/c2 difference!

Am I doing something really silly here?

Thanks, Evan
