I submitted a bug report on this about a week ago (#506), but have got no response so far, so I'm seeing if I get a reponse here.

I have a problem with the propogation of optical photons. They are produced by a particle gun, rather than a physics process, and have initial position, direction, energy and polarisation specified. They propogate through water in a spherical tank. For the first step (from the start point to either the first intersection with the walls (an optical surface) or a Rayleigh scattering event) they travel at the correct speed c/n (n = 1.33 is the refractive index). For all subsequent steps they travel at speed c / n2, n2 = 1.165. Is this due to setting something up incorretly, or some bug in Geant4 (using version 4.5.1 p01, compiled with g++ 3.2 under Linux Redhat 8.0).

A 600 line section of code that shows this problem is available if anyone is interested.
