I am no expert in GPS, but I think that when you specify /gps/hist/type arb you have to specify at least two points:

/gps/hist/point 1.77 0.03705

/gps/hist/point 1.89999 0.092

and a way this should be interpolated:

/gps/hist/inter Lin

Also, note from the GPS manual:

/gps/hist/point E_hi Weight

Specify one entry (with contents Weight) in a histogram (where E_hi is the bin upper edge) or point-wise distribution (where E_hi is the abscissa). The abscissa E_hi must be in Geant4 default units (MeV for energy, rad for angle).

So, with: 1.77 you give the optical photon energy as 1.77 MeV.

The one polished face should have an 'auxiliary' volume on the box's outside. You'd then define two surfaces, one between box and outside (mother) volume as groundfrontpainted, and the other between box and auxiliary volume as polished.

You need also to define an aperture for your detector in order to count the photons that hit it.
