Question Scintillation with an alpha source

Forum: Processes Involving Optical Photons
Date: 23 Jan, 2014
From: Amy M <Amy M>

Hello,

I am trying to simulate the generation of optical photons through an alpha source interacting with a scintillator. As of now, I do not get any optical photons generated with an alpha source, however when I change it to a gamma source, I do get optical photons. What might the reason for this be? Are there physics processes I need to include when using an alpha source? I do not know of anything else that might cause this change.

Also, I typically use GATE for these simulations, but I thought I would ask this community about my problem as well, as it seems to have stumped a lot of people.

I am fairly new to this, and am trying to use these simulations for my Master's thesis.

Thank you for any help,

-Amy
