The concept of optical photon polarization in Geant4 is a classical one, where the photon's linear polarization is characterized by a polarization vector perpendicular to the photon's (particle description) propagation vector, see Optics book by Hecht & Zajac - chapter 4 - derivation of Snell's Law (and earlier).
