I have a question regarding the production of Cerenkov photons. In order to speed up the simulation I would like to apply the quantum efficiency curve of my photon detector already at the Cerenkov photon production level (not to propagate the photons that aren't detected at the end). I tried using UserSteppingAction, killing the photons in their first step, but the time gain is not what I expected (one saves ~1/3 of time by propagating ~1/4 of photons, while naively one would expect time gain of factor 4).
Is it the calculation of production of photons so costly? Is there any other way for taking q.e. into account even at earlier stage, like multiplying the spectrum of Cerenkov photons with q.e. curve?
