Must you use a scintillator? Would a CdZnTe semiconductor suffice instead?

A paper re thermal neutrons and CdZnTe is
McGregor,_D.S. and_Rojeski,_R.A., "Performance of CdZnTe geometrically weighted semiconductor Frisch grid radiation detectors", 1999
and a number of papers re gamma photons and CdZnTe and Geant have been written.
