Which ROOT version and C++ standard are you using? It looks like this may be ROOT6 and certainly compiled with C++11 (hence the use of atomics). In either case, I think you'll need to recompile Geant4 itself in C++11 mode by reconfiguring with the GEANT4_BUILD_CXXSTD option set to "c++11" and then rebuilding/installing. The example should then automatically pick up the correct set of flags to use when building.
