Neil,

If you want to unset GEANT4_USE_XM after using cmake to setup Geant4 I will do it in the following way:

[First]

   cd /to/your/geant4/build/directory/

[Second] Type

  ccmake .

[Third] Perform any changes to you flags.

[Fourth A] If not changes, quit by pressin 'q'.

[Fourth B] If changes were made, press 'c' for configure. After it configures (it can take few seconds - check the progress bar) then you need to press 'g' for generate (and it will exit ccmake after it is done)

At this point your Geant 4 installation should reflect the changes made. Notice this is way faster than recompiling the whole distribution from scratch.

Now I have to admit in my distribution I did not see G4UI_USE_XM flag when I use ccmake on my system. I don't not how to unset that precise flag. Guessing, I would probably unset it in my main function of my program:

  #ifdef G4UI_USE_XM
  #undef G4UI_USE_XM
  #endif

Give it a try and see if this helps. Otherwise, I would let the experts answer this question.

Chris
