Thank you guys,

I have replaced lots of QT4 packages with the QT5 ones using Ubuntu Software center but still facing the same problem.

If it is necessary, my graphic drivers are: maluba@maluba-Satellite-C850-F32Z:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Whistler LE [Radeon HD 6610M/7610M] [1002:6742]

Which I understand has full and good 3D accelerated support.

On a i5-quadcore, 4GB RAM, Toshiba Satellite C850-F32z I also have ATI/AMD proprietary FLGRX graphics driver running properly.

sometimes (when it chooses to) the viewer hangs on until I run/beamOn <number of particles>, or /vis/scene/add/trajectories etc; just at those kinds of times. I really don't seem to see the source of the problem.

I do appreciate your feedback (John and Pete). I am not a linux expert either.

cheers
