I got past that, as described in

But now it crashes due to an assert failure in some iterator. Still before main() is entered :(.

I give up. Geant4.9.6.p02 is just not ready for Windows, at least in my deliberately old environment (WindowsXp, Cygwin, VC++ 2008). I'm tired of debugging somebody else's code with crude MS tools that are useless before main.

I'm reverting to geant4.9.5.p02 on Windows. I won't deal with Windows until I move to Geant4.10.X (probably a few months); with luck the Geant4 developers will find and fix any remaining problems before I get there. By then I probably won't need to support Windows XP and can use more modern tools.
