Granular libraries have been deprecated for the following main reasons:

  • Maintaining two different ways to build (and then use) the libraries is awkward and confusing for developers and users.
  • Of the two, global libraries are easier to use, test and maintain.

In general, statically linking to global libraries should not be too different from linking to granular ones. My limited understanding is that compilers (in most cases) will only link in those objects needed, so you won't get a copy of the whole library in your executable, just the bits that are needed.

Having said all of this, we are investigating new modularization schemes for the Geant4 libraries to better group and isolate functionality. This is still a work in progress, and depends on other aspects of the architecture and user domains.
