 Hello Matthew,

our experience is limited to Debian in the past and, more recently, to Ubuntu, but running stand-alone, not in virtual machines. For successfully compiling Geant4 in Ubuntu 10.04 we found valuable information in this link:

http://www.ece.ualberta.ca/~kirkwood/GEANT4-Kubuntu.html

in our case, the libraries which had to be installed were :

libglu1-mesa-dev

libxt-dev

libxmu-dev

After that, we compiled Geant4 9.2 Patch-03 without problems. In a more recent installation of Geant4 in another computer, also running Ubuntu 10.04, we had compilations errors and it was necessary also to install

zlib1g-dev

Furthermore, for the installation of ROOT we needed:

libxft-dev

libxpm-dev

 I hope that helps

                     Jose Manuel
