I doubt that is the crux of the issue. As I mentioned in
HTTP://HyperNews.SLAC.Stanford.edu:5090/HyperNews/geant4/get/installconfig/1272/1/1/1/1/1.html
, the GNU Compiler Collection (not just Linux) has optimization options disabled by default.
