it should be explicitly written in the docs (and it will!)... but "make -j 4"
is NOT supported for directly building global libraries and does not work
(works fine instead for granular libraries), this because the way dependencies
are organized by default follows the logic of granular libraries and are not
placed all at the same level.
In order to have both modes (granular and global) work seamlessly and allow
to switch from one to another without having to regenerate the dependencies
the above is not possible to achieve without a major re-implementation
(and extra-complication) of the build system.

If really wishing to exploit the '-j 4' option one can always adopt two steps:
  make -j 4     <-- first build the granular modules
  make global

BTW, it takes roughly 20 mins to build all G4 libs on a Quad MacPro in
normal mode....
