A probably related problem: global libraries don't work on this machine.

I routinely tell Configure to use only global libraries, but now when I link my program I get:
  Using granular libraries ...
ERROR: No liblist program or library map file.
These are needed for building with granular
       libraries.
         cd $G4INSTALL/source
         gmake
or if you are sure you have already made all the
       granular libraries:
         gmake libmap

I follow those directions, and then it works, using granular libraries.

Can someone explain the tradeoffs between global and granular libraries?
