Hi.

Placing the PMT in a mother volume filled 
with oil should work fine, as long as the
PMT fits completely inside it and does not
overlap with other daughter volumes.

Please post the relavent code from your
DetectorConstruction where you are creating
this setup.

Also, maybe you could put some excerpts
from running a geantino through your
detector with "/tracking/verbose 4".  This
will show whether a particle is correctly
stepping through your geometry.

BTW, I have had the best success checking
for overlaps using the command 
"/geometry/test/recursive_test", which
seems to catch errors that other tests
do not.
