None First inelastic interaction point of hadronic processes

To get the first inelastic interaction point of pions inside a G4Region 
(an envelope for G4VFastSimulationModel), I tried the following code 
segment;

G4StepPoint* postStep = fastTrack.GetPrimaryTrack()->GetStep()->GetPostStepPoint();
G4String procName = postStep->GetProcessDefinedStep()->GetProcessName();  

if(procName == "PionPlusInelastic" || procName == "PionMinusInelastic") {
  isFirst = true;
}

The resultant total step length (x) after pions enter a detector volume
(an envelope) by this method gave much shorter distance than expected - 
I expect that the first inelatic interaction point would follow 
exp^{-x/lambda0} where lambda0 is the interaction length of the detector.  
What am I missing?  Thanks for your help.
