Hi all,

Using 9.5, I have had trouble getting low energy photo-neutrons to work. I am particularly interested in a 88YBe source, using 1.836 MeV gammas. However, when I try using this, I simply get no neutrons. It seems that G4PhotoNuclearCrossSection has a cut off (THmin=2MeV) for making photoneutrons, which is above the (gamma,n) threshold for Be (1.66 MeV).

After speaking to Vladimir, he asked me to check using example Hadr00 which indeed shows this 2MeV cut off (see end of message). Anyway, there are tabulated cross-sections at http://www-nds.iaea.org/photonuclear/, so I put these in my own cross-section class (a modified version of G4PhotoNuclearCrossSection that has an if statement for Z==4, A==9 to check against tabulated cross-sections).

I can now get neutrons at lower energies, and I wonder if anyone experienced in photo-nuclear physics can help me understand them. The source I have is a small (1.5 cm rad) BeO cylinder surrounding an isotropic gamma source, and I record the produced neutron energies. For the gamma energies, I am comparing 1.836 MeV to 2.614 MeV. I

n the 1.836 MeV case, 97% of neutrons produced are at ~152 keV, with a few below, but in the 2.614 about only 67% are in the main peak at 840 keV. I cannot tell from the tracking output if this is competition between gamma+9Be->5He+alpha->n+alpha+alpha and gamma+9Be->n+8Be->n+alpha+alpha, because the intermediate steps do not appear in the tracking (they are very fast after-all). I just wanted to know what defines the percentage of neutrons outside the main mono-energetic peak in the code, and what assumptions / experimental results have gone into this.
