Hello! In my simulation of a neutron dosemeter I'm trying to determine its behavior at very low neutron energies. At higher energies (E > 10 keV) I was using QGSP_BIC_HP as a Physics List, as recommended. However, for thermal energies, i.e. less than 4eV, I was told that the "G4NeutronHPThermalScattering" model incorporating the S(α,β) matrix should be applied for the elastic scattering process. As far as I know, this is not enabled by default in Geant4.9.3.p2, which is the version I am using. I am simulating the dosemeter on a plexiglass phantom of 30x30x15 cm³. The neutron beam has the same width as the phantom, but clearly only neutrons that are backscattered and enter the device (~1cm²) are counted. For the phantom material, I use "G4_PLEXIGLASS". This is the only material I am concerned about when it comes to thermal scattering. There are two questions I have now: 1.) As this thermal scattering model only applies to elastic processes, will there actually be a huge difference between calculations with and without S(α,β) matrix? Only plexiglass plays a role here, the energy deposition in the detector is goverened by inelastic processes then. More important, 2.) Would "G4NeutronHPThermalScattering" actually apply to G4_PLEXIGALSS? As far a I know, mainly water and polyethylene are affected by the S(α,β) matrix. If I was using a water phantom, this modification would be necessary of course, but for plexiglass maybe it is not? Thank you, Matthias V.
