I am trying to model the efficiency of a BC-501 type neutron detector, with neutron energies ranging up to 20 MeV. So I am shooting neutrons at a can of BC-501 ~ 6" diameter and 8" long.
Because I of course include elastic processes in my physics list, I would expect that the maximum energy a neutron could lose in its first interaction is equal to the neutron's incident energy. This is in fact seen in a 2-d histogram of energy deposited in the first interaction vs. incident neutron energy (attached, ignore y-axis label, it should read single interaction energy deposit (MeV)).
However, this trend continues until just below 9 MeV incident energy. At this point and above the maximum energy that can be deposited in one interaction remains constant at just below 9 MeV. Why does this happen?
For reference, the hadronic elastic process I use is G4HadronElasticProcess, using G4NeutronHPElastic for 0 to 20 MeV and G4LElastic above 20 MeV.
