If I understand your original setup correctly, then optical photons should travel from the sphere to one of the cylinders directly in a single step - if they arrive at the appropriate boundary point.

From the behaviour you see it appears that they may not be doing this.

Could you please check what an optical photon with a trajectory that should take it from one volume to the next directly does ?

I suggest using /tracking/verbose 1 to see whether the next volume is correctly identified to be a cylinder (if originating from the sphere) or vice versa.

In addition try shooting a geantino with the same trajectory and see whether it sees the same geometry boundary.

If you can post the key section of the resulting printout, together with the names to help us identify the relevant solids, we could try to suggest whether you are experiencing an issue with your geometry or not.
