Thank you for pointing me to that example. It seems that you really have to specify a physical volume for the mother volume in which you replicate another (sub-)volume. This is missing in the Geant4 book I have. :-(

It looks like that I should be able to use ->GetReplicaNumber() of G4TouchableHistory to retrieve the number of a replica that was hit.

Now I only need to find out how to create Histograms. I could write my own class to do this, but I also found something called AIDA: http://geant4.slac.stanford.edu/g4cd/March2004/Documentation/WorkshopExercises/Exercise5.html
