Thanks for your ideas. Here is what worked and did not work:

I redefined the geometry to use the "Russian doll" approach, in which each successive volume is placed inside the previous one, instead of concentric hollow spherical layers all individually placed within a mother volume and not overlapping. If I still use spherical sections (G4Sphere), this does not work. If I use G4Orb, it works. (I had to learn how to kill a track from my SteppingAction to avoid tracking through the Earth to the other side, but that turned out to be easy.)

Using SetWorldMaximumExtent(fWorldSize) did not make a difference in either case.
