I think the idea is that you can then use daughtersInvisible as a toggle, to toggle on and off a specfic set of daughters, the specific visiblity of which may have been set with those other commands.

In any case, perhaps a simpler way to go about visualizing just a subset of your volumes would be to only add those volumes to the visualization in the first place.

If you are currently using
 /vis/drawVolume
 to draw everything, you may not be aware that this is actually a compound command
that really does:
 /vis/scene/create
 /vis/scene/add/volume world

You can instead do much more specific commands to control what is added. For example:

/vis/scene/create
 /vis/scene/add/volume world ! 2
 to draw the world down to the first 2 levels

and then
 /vis/scene/add/volume mymirrors 3
 to add mirror number 3 and all of its children

Etc.

Use the command guidance (help system) for more details.
