None question on how to use Readout geometry

Dear Geant4 experts,
I am trying to understand the significance of Readout geometry. It seems
when the real geometry is complicated, using readout could be useful. So my
understanding is the hits collected is associated with virtual readout geometry,
not the real geometry. For example, if readout geometry A coresponding real objects
B and C in space, the energy deposition got in A is contributed by two parts ,one from
B, the other from C. But user could not tell which part belongs to which object. Is
my understanding right?
Then go further, another question is, in some case, if we don't know the real
geometry before experiemnts, such as the real geometry is an unknow sample waiting for
test, could we use readout geometry to avoid the correlation between hits
and the real sample? For example, sample A is a box, sample B is a ball.
we want to know the energy deposition in these samples. If we can , that is a very
good news , because we only need to write one readout geometry whose size is big enough
to contain all samples. Can we?
    Thank in advance!
with regards
