None Mother Volumes

Current documentation seems to indicate that when using G4PVPlacement, the mother volume should point to a logical volume. But I have seen examples, such as in where the mother volume is a physical volume (see snippet below).

I am having some problems having daughter volumes that are also sensitive detectors register hits (They work fine if they are just placed in the world by themselves).

Any clarifications on un-parameterized Mother-daugher Volume setups would be appreciated

PS: In my model that doesn't register hits, I use logical volume for the mother volume the way the documentation implies.
I also posted a similar query on thread 323, as it sounded similar, but I didn't provide the detail of the example below.

  // World:
  G4Box *WorldBox= new G4Box("WorldBox",400*cm, 400*cm, 400*cm);
  G4LogicalVolume *WorldLog=new G4LogicalVolume(WorldBox,Air,
						  "WorldLogical", 0, 0, 0);
  G4PVPlacement *WorldPhys=new G4PVPlacement(0,G4ThreeVector(),
  // Size of detectors:
  G4double detectSize = 125*cm;

  // "Drift Chamber":
  // Not used in parameterisation.
  // -- Logical volume:
  G4Box *driftChamberBox
    = new G4Box("DriftChamberSolid", detectSize, detectSize, 40*cm);
  G4LogicalVolume *driftChamberLog
    = new G4LogicalVolume(driftChamberBox,He,
			  "DriftChamberLogical", 0, 0, 0);
  // -- Placement:
  // G4PVPlacement *driftChamberPhys  =
      new G4PVPlacement(0,G4ThreeVector(0., 0., 50*cm),
