I'm guessing...

IsThisCulled takes a logical volume piointer and a material pointer. It is possible that one of those points to an invalid object. This can happen if you instantiate a local object, pass the address, then that object gets deleted. When an object needs a long life, you must use the new operator, just like for all the objects in your code sample. However, your code sample did not show how the material was instantiated. Perhaps that's the problem.

I also noticed that the translations you provided seemed to indicate that you are providing them in the global coordinate system. Actually, dauughters are specified in the local coordinate system of the mother.

There is no limit to the depth of the volume hierarchy.
