There is a feature of visualisation that might help...

If you can identify the volume by its path in the geometry hierarchy, e.g:

  /vis/drawTree  # To see the tree and all the names
  /vis/set/touchable World 0 Envelope 0 Shape1 0  # From exampleB1
  /vis/touchable/dump

will print lots of information including the global transformation. If you think there's any mileage in this we could have a look at how its done and we may be able write something that allows you to pick up this information in C++ code.
