Question assembly volume missing each other

I have two sets of repeating objects, used as assembly volumes, that I want to combine like this:

   group A: a   a   a   a 
   group B: b   b   b   b
   combined result: (optical photon)-> b a b a b a b a

group A is made of reflecting material, and group B is absorber (partially transparent). If I shoot optical photon from the left, and it successfully enters the left-most b, I found that it would directly go to the next b without seeing the a in between. The verbosity looks like

  b1 -> World -> b2 -> World -> b3 -> World -> ...

There's no intersection between volumes nor purposely put vacuum volume anywhere, but somehow once the photon entered b, it acted like it's in the "b-world" that it's just "World" between b's. I've tried to do geometry/test/run, but since my geometry is much more complected, which is also the reason why I need to modularize the volumes, it takes forever to diagnose. I'd guess this is due to the hierarchy of the volumes, but I just don't know how to raise all the things to the same hierarchical level. I've also tried to limit the step size to ensure the photon couldn't step directly from one b to the neighboring b, but had to take a few steps in a. But still, the verbosity showed "World" at where it should've been a.
