You did not mention how many volumes you wanted to place.

For very large numbers, replicas are the most memory efficient solution.

By using a single box for each sphere you are introducing a lot of extra 
boundaries, though.

You may want to vary the size of the box, and include more spheres, to 
see whether the running time is improved.  ( For example try it with 2 
spheres per box or 4 to see if it runs faster. )
