What is the proper way to combine two parameterizations that overlap?

I have two sets of parameterizations, each generating a series of layers, which need to be interleaved.

In order to place a parameterisation it must be in a mother volume, which may be physical or logical - either way, it must have a defined material.

As a volume may only contain one parameterization, my two sets of layers are placed into two separate mothers, which I have filled with air.

I have then placed the two mothers such that they overlap, and the parameterized daughters interleave.

However, from what I can tell, it seems that the mother volume placed second completely over-rides the first - such that the second mother volume's air material over-rides the first mother's parameterized material, effectively eliminating the parameterized layers.

I guess in this implementation there is no clear definition of hierarchy to say this isn't what I would like. Is it possible to specify a hierarchy? How can I implement this kind of geometry?

All suggestions much appreciated.
