Hello,

you may use parameterization volumes or you may introduce slices of atmosphere as simple placements. Inside each slice you may define different materials or if composition of atoms is the same for groups of these slices you may use "base material" approach: set of materials which are different only by density may provide you some advantages especially if numbe of slices will be large.

Please, note that within one Geant4 volume material should be fixed and not changed during the run independently on method how volumes are defined.
