Your question is pure physical and has no relation to geometry, because of that you get the late answer.

The results will be reasonable but not identical due to the process of multiple scattering. If it is possibe to neglect different scattering inside this absorber (for thin absorber it is likely possible), then you may use your trick. Cross sections are proportional to the density, so all processes except scattering will work in the same way. Also effects of magnetic field will be different.
