According to the Geant4 web documentation (please refer to the Geant4 User Guide, chapter Geometry), a daughter volume should be inside a mother volume. They can share surfaces, however due to potential numerical problems it is better to put the daughter completely inside the mother. The latter corresponds to the majority of physical use cases, since the Geant4 surface thickness is typically 10^-9 mm.
