Question error: Can't allocate region

Keywords: malloc: vm_allocate, memory overload error
Forum: Event and Track Management
Date: 02 Aug, 2005
From: Tim Cohen <>

Hi, I am a relatively new geant user and have finally gotten my first simulation running. The problem that I have run into is the following. When I try to run the simulation with my particle gun firing mu+ of energies above 100 GeV I run into the following error.

Start Run processing.
1 primaries are passed from G4EventTransformer.
!!!!!!! Now start processing an event !!!!!!!
### pop requested out of 1 stacked tracks.
*** malloc: vm_allocate(size=8421376) failed (error code=3)
*** malloc[20112]: error: Can't allocate region
Abort trap

My physics list includes the following processes:

( particleName == "mu+" ||
               particleName == "mu-"    ) {
      pmanager->AddProcess(new G4MultipleScattering,-1, 1,1);
      pmanager->AddProcess(new G4MuIonisation,      -1, 2,2);
      pmanager->AddProcess(new G4MuBremsstrahlung,  -1, 3,3);
      pmanager->AddProcess(new G4MuPairProduction,  -1, 4,4); }

One possible idea that I had was that my model (which is very simple, just 5 concentric shells of varying density, but with an outer radius of 1738 km) is too big, and it canít track all the secondaries, causing the memory overload.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I am running OSX Tiger if that helps.

I look forward to your comments and advice.
