Before recording the hit, you should check the post-step status. Steps are always stopped at the boundary of a volume; any energy deposit associated with that would be due to continuous ionization energy loss along the step up to the boundary. You can test for the "boundary step" condition with

  if (aStep->GetPostStepPoint()->GetStepStatus() == fGeomBoundary) { ...

You may choose to simply ignore such steps entirely, or alternatively, check whether the step's energy deposit (aStep->GetTotalEnergyDeposit()) is non-zero, or above some threshold dependent upon your situation.
