Thanks for the details.

So is the best approach to let the track take at least one full step within the volume pointed to by the sensitive detector in order to trigger the standard processHits() method?

It seems that if the SD class is called before SteppingAction, then I would need to let Geant4 push the track into the volume so that the preStepPoint points to it. I would then record the preStepPoint energy within my SD class, after which the track status could be set to stop and kill in the SteppingAction. Would this approach work?
