None Locality of energy deposition from Step()::GetTotalEnergyDeposit()

I've seen many examples using the built-in function of aStep->GetTotalEnergyDeposit() to calculate the depth-dose profile.

I've seen it described in other posts that this function returns the total energy deposited due to all resulting interactions from a step.

I am wondering how local these interactions are: Is it possible to generate a photon that deposits energy non-local to the particle, and have that energy accidentally be included in the local depth-dose measurement?

I am having difficulty finding where this function is defined so I am unsure what terms in the energy actually go into it.

Thanks, Ming
