I found out that if I set the default cuts in physics list class to be extremely small, then the electron interacts a little and the trajectory does indeed now trace out a physically correct path (e.g. circle for uniform field, etc). It seems wrong to me that a cut matters (why can't I ask for 10 steps in a vacuum ?) but I think I can investigate it further myself now.
