You don't say which implementation of AIDA you are using (e.g. Anaphe, OpenScientist, JAIDA) without which it is hard to diagnose your problem.

The advnatge of XML is that it is ascii, so easy to read and manipulate. There are many tools based on XSLT for transforming XML from one format to another, or you can just write your own program to read the XML and save it in whatever format you like.

XML is the common format supported by all AIDA tools. What other formats are supported depends on which AIDA implementation you are using.
