It's read using the high-energy physics analysis package, ROOT. If you wish, you can download and install ROOT from

I'm surprised that you were able to have the .root file produced if you don't have ROOT installed on your system. Are you using a centrally managed installation of GEANT4, or one you built yourself? If the former, check with your system adminstrators to see where they've installed ROOT.
