None Hypernews discussion back up again  by Douglas Smith <Douglas Smith>,   25 Aug, 2006
I have brought up HyperNews development discussions again, at least for now. This is now using the slac-45 tag (as of this posting), which should put better controls on the ability to post. This hopefully will reduce the amount of SPAM, esp. since SLAC security is going to taking a zero tolerance attitude towards SPAM. This will be a dev. issue, with more changes on the way. If the SPAM gets bad again, I will probably have to remove access to this forum, until we can make enough changes to bring it back up again.

Also now, and in the near future, only registered member will able to post and requests to become a member here will have to go through an admin. We might change this is the future, but this is the way discussions will go here for now.

To the SPAM-ers that might see this, this not a request to become more clever. The exsitance of SPAM on hypernews is reducing the ability of people to support scientific research, and making it much, much harder for disucssions to go on. You should feel more than some small amount of shame for increasing the difficulties of people lives, who are trying to make our world, and yours better.

None SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-38 now available  by Peter Elmer <Peter Elmer>,   26 Apr, 2006
  Hi,

SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-38 is now available from the download page
of the SLAC HyperNews:

   http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/

Relative to version 1.11-slac-37, the following changes were made:

o A fix for the proper decoding of the "quoted printable" mails (i.e. the
problem which leads to strange encoded things "=20" in postings from
     certain mailers).

o Reorganization of the Categorized Index page to better use the page
     space.

o Reorganization of the Central Subscription page to organize the forums
list by category (regardless of whether one is subscribed or not) instead
of the old way (one big group of "subscribed" forums and one big group
     of "not subscribed" forums).

o A lot of the explanatory text on various pages (clutter for people who
have used HN) has been moved into a "page help". Clicking on this button
(located in the upper right hand corner under the navigation bar, if
available) should open an inline explanation that you can toggle to
     close.

o Simplification and reduction of clutter on the "add message" page (the
clutter from the emoticons still have to be dealt with). This includes
also a "quote previous message" feature and the ability to resize
the text area (to resize, grab the bar at the bottom of the textarea).

o The forum menu on the "Recent" page is now only shown if you choose
"Selected Forums" (reduces the clutter a bit).

o lots of internal cleanup (which hopefully didn't break anything) and
other small bug fixes, plus some groundwork has been laid for a
couple of other requested features which aren't quite done.

Since I forgot to post here for several smaller update versions, I note
that:

Version 1.11-slac-37 had the following updates with respect to 1.11-slac-36:

o Fix for the problem when posting messages with "via email

o Small changes to allow more installation-specific customization
of instructions on the login page

Version 1.11-slac-36 had the following updates with respect to 1.11-slac-35:

o Increase size of text area to 80 characters when adding a message.

o Changed the thread control labeling from "Inline:"/"Outline:"
to "Inline Depth:"/"Outline Depth:" to help (a little bit)
     in clarifying what these are.

o On categorized index page, change the named anchor to a null string
_next_ to the category name instead of the category name itself. This
avoids the category names looking like links themselves.

o Visited links now go dark purple instead of the previous dark gray
(which was basically indistinguishable from non-link text)

o Avoid sending copy to owner of forum for every posting. The owner
must subscribe explicitly. (Avoids the admin list getting a copy of every
     posting and other related oddities.)

   o Other small text fixes.

See the History file for more details. If you note any problems or have
feedback (positive or negative!) on the changes, please post to the
HyperNews Feedback forum:

  http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/HyperNews/hypernews/get/HNFeedBack.html

rather than reply to this posting.

None SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-35 now available  by Peter Elmer <Peter Elmer>,   15 Jan, 2006
  Hi All,

SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-35 is now available from the download page
of the SLAC HyperNews:

   http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/

Relative to version 1.11-slac-34, the following changes were made:

o A problem with determining the forum for the search engine was
fixed (it previously assumed that the $hndocs path ended literally
in "hndocs", not true at all sites)

o Fix a layout problem seen with Opera

o Add options to the hnrc to allow printout to be changed on the login
page when the HNshell.pl method is available for membership creation
     and resetting passwords.

See the History file for more details.

o Made message ordering on "recent" page match that selected for the
forum pages ("most recent to oldest" or "oldest to most recent")
o Changed "Newsgroups" header to "X-Hn-Forum" to avoid problems with
certain MUA's (e.g. Outlook, Mozilla) when "reply-all" is selected
    o misc. small fixes

  Between 1.11-slac-33 and 1.11-slac-32:

o Changes to save hnrc files when running setup.pl

  Hi All,

SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-27 is now available from the download
page on the SLAC Hypernews webpage:

   http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/

The changes since version 1.11-slac-26 include:

o Updates and bug fixes for HNshell.pl
o Fixes to get proper URL for login.pl and logout.pl links in the
      Title bar.
o Links on central subscription page now point to forum page itself
(as opposed to subscriber list for that forum). This has always
seemed more useful to me, at least!
o Put back (optionally) the classic HN buttons on forum/message
pages (controlled by $textButtons hnrc parameter)
    o Misc. cleanup

See the History file for more details.

None SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-26 now available  by Peter Elmer <Peter Elmer>,   28 Nov, 2005
  Hi All,

SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-26 is now available from the download
page on the SLAC Hypernews webpage:

   http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/

The changes since version 1.11-slac-25 include:

    o Change hardcoded a number of "/HyperNews/top.pl" to "$hnbinURL/top.pl"
      to cover general case
o Remove explicit "in-reply-to" printout from outgoing mails, this was
just confusing for new users (hopefully there will be a minimum set
of M$ users who need this to get the threading right)
o Changes to deal with separate policies for "join" and "update/inquire"
(for memberships), now that add-member.pl and edit-member.pl are
      more factorized.
o Add a standard footer on all pages referencing both the SLAC HyperNews
site, the version and the original HyperNews.org site
o A fix to mail-incoming.pl for the case where the option has been set
to require that the email address of incoming mails matches that
of a known member: if the address is unknown, dump the mail to a file
in a directory under hndocs (for subsequent review)
o When user isn't logged in print "Not Logged In" with link to login
page in title bar (rather than "Member:" with link to logout page)
o Add a gif for Atlas for the Navigation Bar (I have a couple of others
      if this one doesn't please..)
o Various bits of small cleanup

See the History file for more details.

      style sheet

  Hi All,

SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-23 is now available from the download
page on the SLAC Hypernews webpage:

   http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/

The changes since version 1.11-slac-22 include:

o the documentation pages from HyperNews.org are now available in a
"doc" directory (and partially cleaned up to reflect the changes
      made in the slac version)

o Updates for debugging the email gateway (from Terry Hung)

o Add the HNshell.pl script (can be used to allow account creation
via ssh to a particular machine instead of creation by web form)

o Changed user default cookie lifetime to "default" (meaning
session cookies. It was "none", meaning enter password every time,
which would just be confusing for people)

o Add (optional) check that the email address of postings via email
gateway is that of a known member (from Matthias Steinke)

o Fixed URL for logout.pl in some scripts and made setup.pl set
up properly the soft link for logout.pl

o Put swish.cgi script (taken from swish-e 2.4.3) directly into the
HN distribution itself. Add the usual HN authentication checks to
      this script.

See the History file for more details.

  Hi All,

SLAC Hypernews version 1.11-slac-22 is now available from the download
page on the SLAC Hypernews webpage:

   http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/

The changes since version 1.11-slac-21 include:

o Default for cookie lifespan changed to 0 days (i.e. session cookie)

o Added authorization checks on recent/get/get-notify/index/cindex,
with redirection to login.pl if manual security is set on in hnrc.
Still need to add this to a few other scripts.

o Replaced by-hand parsing in 'recent' with explicit POST/GET sections

o Added a logout.pl script (should work for manual security, at least)

o Removed old javascript tree index and makeindex.pl (generated static
pages, now replaced by 'index' and 'cindex')

o Fixed/worked-around the inlining messages bug:

 http://hypernews.slac.stanford.edu/HyperNews/hypernews/get/HNDevelop/11/3.html

o Added a bit to some pages which shows the name of the current user and
a link to the logout page

o Moved message about in-reply-to to the end of the emails sent out (this
is just there to help those using broken MUA's)

See the History file for more details.

The changes since version 1.11-slac-20 include:

o Much of the setup for (optional) use of swish-e as a search engine
is now done via the setup.pl script

o Some simplification of the layout (removed redundant thread buttons)

o Add a cgi script cindex to generate the "categorized index"

o Cleanup of top.pl so that it functions as a single entry point which

Note Welcome to HyperNews discussions.  by Douglas Smith <Douglas Smith>,   12 Jul, 2005
Welcome to HyperNews discussions.

This is a HyperNews forum system setup for the continuing use and development of HyperNews. This is geared towards the use of HyperNews that has been developed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) over the past 6 years for the BaBar high energy physics experiment. This system differs in a few ways from the standard HyperNews system dev. from HyperNews.org. Although a number of these changes have become fairly SLAC-specific over the years. Some of the initial discussions will be the development of the system to be flexible enough for use in other hosting sites.

Please take part in these discussion if you are in anyway interested in the use of HyperNews. Become a member of these forums, and subscribe to lists. Better discussion will result in a better system for use by all.
