Question gamma emission greater than incident neutron energy

Forum: Hadronic Processes

From: Michael <Michael>

Hi,

I've seen this question asked several times before with no response so I'm hoping someone can help me!

I have 14.1 MeV neutron beam hitting some Beryllium and gammas are being produced exceeding the incident neutron energy by several MeV. I've registered GQSP_BERT_HP as my hadronic interaction physics list.

I realise that the total reaction energy changes slightly when you convert to the COM frame but not by enough to generate this difference.

I'm seeing two alphas in my target material and two neutrons. I suggest that the main occuring reaction is liekly to be:

Be9 + n --> Be8 + n

Be8--> 2alpha

The compound nucleus created in the n,2n reaction will likely be in an excited state and then decay to ground state of Be8. However, the gammas are larger than the total reaction energy.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm guessing that this may have been answered somewhere before and I apologise for having not found the repsonse.

Kind Regards,

Mike

which version are you talking about? it seems that several bugs exist in the HPNeutron package, so take care and send a message in the bug report. However, it is a good new to see that Be8 decays immediately in two alphas. Check it in SteppingAction in order to be sure that the n,2n reaction you mention is of concern. Regards
